1Food by the kilo or the bag
Bird seed, grain and dry pet food sell loose by the kilo or in 5 kg and 20 kg bags. Set kg as the base unit and add the bags as packages. Selling 750 g from an open bag reduces stock by 0.75 kg, and a new bag adds its full weight.

2Dates on feed and treats
Pet food and treats expire, and stale feed is a complaint waiting to happen. Turn on expiry tracking, enter the date when stock arrives, and the app warns you 30 days before. Move older bags forward and discount short-dated ones.
Without a system
- Loose feed weighed and estimated
- Old stock unnoticed
- Regulars' balances in memory
With Dukaan POS
- Exact weights in stock
- Date warnings
- Customer pages
3Accessories and small items
Collars, leashes, cages, bowls and fish tank items are counted in pieces with their own prices. Group them by category so the counter finds them quickly, and set minimums on the things regulars always ask for.
🧮 Carton to pieces calculator
Stock lives in one base unit, so any package converts cleanly.
4Regular customers
Pet owners tend to be loyal. Keep their names and phone numbers in the customer list; those who pay at month end have a khata balance that you can see at a glance. It helps you remember who prefers which brand.
5A note on animals
Dukaan POS tracks products, not individual animals. If you sell live birds, fish or puppies, you can record the sale as an ordinary item with a price, but there are no health, age or vaccination fields. It suits food, feed and supplies best.
6Brand loyalty and substitutes
Pet owners often stick to one brand and will go elsewhere if you are out of it. Set minimums on the brands your regulars buy and review the low-stock list before weekends. When a brand is unavailable, product sales helps you decide which alternative to stock, based on what customers actually bought in the past.
7Small livestock supplies
Many pet shops also sell supplies for birds, fish and small animals: seed, pellets, filters, cages and medicines that are sold as ordinary retail goods. Each is an ordinary product with a unit and price. Keeping them in clear categories helps staff find items fast and gives you a view of which animal type brings the most revenue.
8A week of routines
Pet shops benefit from a simple rhythm. Early in the week, check the low-stock list and order food. Midweek, receive deliveries with expiry dates. At the weekend, when customers come in larger numbers, make sure fast brands are in stock and the counter is ready. At the month end, review khata balances and call the customers who have not yet paid.
