Cosmetics shop POS software: good for billing and stock, limited on shades

Cosmetics shops carry hundreds of brands, many with shades and sizes, and customers expect fresh dates. Cosmetics shop POS software should handle billing, expiry and supplier accounts well. Dukaan POS does those parts properly, but it does not group shades under one product, so we say that plainly before you start.

Read this first: where Dukaan POS fits and where it does not

Every shade, size and fragrance of a product is a separate item in Dukaan POS, because there are no variants. A shop with a few hundred items is comfortable. A shop with thousands of shade-and-size combinations will find the catalogue heavy, and there is no barcode scanning to speed it up. If that is you, look at a system with variants and scanning.

1What works well

Billing is quick: search a product, set the quantity, apply a discount if you allow it and take cash or a wallet payment. Stock falls with every sale, low-stock minimums protect your fast brands, and the profit report shows which brands pay. For a shop that stocks its top few hundred lines, that covers most daily needs.

Profit by brand

2Expiry dates matter here

Creams, serums and lipsticks all expire, and customers check. Turn on expiry tracking, enter the date when goods arrive and get a warning a month ahead. Items near the date can be discounted on the line, and any that expire are written off, so the loss shows in the profit report.

A shop that fits

  • A few hundred items
  • Simple billing and dated stock
  • Items found by name

A shop that does not

  • Thousands of shade and size combinations
  • Scanning at every sale
  • Variant grids

3Handling shades without variants

The practical method is naming. Write the brand, the product and the shade together, for example a lipstick named with its colour. Each gets its own stock and minimum, so you always know which shade ran out. It adds items, but it gives exact counts, and the low-stock list becomes a precise reorder sheet.

🧮 Profit and margin calculator

Profit per unit
Margin
Markup
Total profit

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of cost.

4Brands and supplier accounts

Cosmetics come from a few distributors, often on credit and with scheme offers. Record each delivery with the bill number and your part payment. The supplier's balance and pay-by date stay in one place, so statement checks take minutes and you can compare the cost of the same item across suppliers.

5Regular customers

Cosmetics shops live on repeat buyers. Keep a customer list with phone numbers; credit buyers have a balance and a history. When a customer asks for the product she bought last time, her past bills show it, which feels like personal service and takes seconds.

6Who should look elsewhere

If your business depends on scanning a barcode for every product, or on one product with fifty shade options and size-wise stock, Dukaan POS will feel slow. If you are a small shop that values simple billing, dated stock and honest profit figures, it fits well and the free trial lets you test it with your real items.

7A worked example

Say a lipstick range has six shades. Create six products, each with its own cost, price and minimum of three. When two shades fall to three or less, the low-stock list shows them by name, and a single call to the distributor restocks both. After a month, product sales shows that two shades make most of the profit, so you can order deeper on them and stop buying the shades that sit.

★Get started in four steps

  1. Add your top brands firstInclude the shade in each product name.
  2. Turn on expiry trackingEnter dates on every delivery.
  3. Set minimums on fast shadesUse the low-stock list to reorder.
  4. Review profit by brandDrop lines that do not earn.

!Good to know before you start

  • There are no product variants; each shade and size is a separate product.
  • There is no barcode scanning.
  • Stock is counted per product, not per batch.
  • The app needs an internet connection to save.
