1Decide who gets credit
Credit is a privilege for customers you know. Start with people who have bought for months, live or work nearby and have a clear way to pay. Be gentle with new customers: a small first limit costs little, and the first repayment tells you more than any promise. Saying no politely early saves arguments later.

2Set a limit and a date
Every credit customer needs two numbers: how much you will allow at once and when they will pay. A household might get Rs 10,000 until the 1st; a hotel might get Rs 100,000 on a weekly cycle. Tell them the terms when you start. Terms that are said aloud are far easier to enforce than those assumed.
Credit by habit
- Anyone can take udhaar
- Bills remembered, not written
- Collection when you remember
Credit by rules
- Limit and due date for each
- Every bill on the customer's page
- A weekly follow-up round
3Write every bill down
Whenever credit is given, record the date, the items and the amount at once, in a place both of you can see. The common failure is the unwritten small item that turns into a dispute. A page per customer, with every bill and payment listed, ends most arguments before they start.
🧮 Customer balance calculator
Record each payment as it comes; the balance updates every time.
4Follow up on a routine
Collecting is easier when it is routine. Pick one day a week, list the customers who are overdue, oldest first, and call or visit them. Be friendly and specific: the amount, the date it was due, and a date they can commit to. Write that date down and check it on the next round.
5Handle the slow payers
For a customer who is late, pause new credit until the old balance is cleared, offer a part-payment plan and keep a record of each instalment. Few customers refuse when you are consistent and respectful. The aim is to keep the customer and recover the money, in that order.
6How the app makes this easier
In Dukaan POS every customer has a page with each bill and payment, a balance and a due date. The dues list sorts by date so your weekly round is ready. It does not message customers for you, but it gives you the exact figure to quote. Read about udhaar khata software or start a free trial.

?Questions about how to manage udhaar in shop
How much credit should I give a customer?
Base it on what they can repay by the date agreed, often no more than a month of their usual spending.
How do I ask for payment politely?
Quote the exact amount and date due, and ask for a date they can commit to.
Should I charge interest on udhaar?
Most small shops do not. A clear date and pausing new credit work better.
What if a customer refuses to pay?
Stop new credit, keep the records and agree on a part-payment plan.
Can software help?
Yes. It keeps every bill, payment and balance in one place and sorts overdue accounts by date.
