1Discount on one item
Each line on the bill has a Disc field. Use it when only one item is cheaper: Rs 20 off a bag of flour, 10% off a case of oil. The line total updates at once, and the customer sees the discounted price on the receipt.
What a 3% discount costs in profit
Example: 12% margin on a Rs 10,000 bill
2Discount on the whole bill
For a regular customer or a large order, apply a discount on the bill total instead, either as a percentage or as a rupee amount. A common case is rounding down: the bill is Rs 4,870 and you take Rs 4,850. Entering Rs 20 off makes the record show exactly that, not an unexplained lower payment.
Without a system
- Discounts rounded off in the head
- Staff give them freely
- Profit unclear
With Dukaan POS
- Discount entered on the bill
- Cashier discounts need your permission
- Profit uses the price charged
3Who is allowed to discount
The owner and manager can always discount. A cashier can only do so if the owner switches that permission on. This is the control most owners want: staff do not give away margin, and when they do, it is by your rule.
🧮 What does a discount cost me?
A discount comes straight out of profit, so it must be won back in extra sales.
4Profit stays honest
The profit reports use the discounted selling price against the average buying cost, so a discount reduces profit on that sale as it really does. You can check how much margin discounts cost you in a month by comparing sales and profit across periods.
5Discounts and returns
If a customer returns a discounted item, the refund follows the price they paid, not the list price, so you never refund more than you took. This keeps the cash drawer and the books in step.
6Setting a discount policy
The software records discounts; you decide the policy. Many shops keep it simple: regular customers get a small percentage on large bills, damaged or short-dated packs get a line discount, and everything else sells at the displayed price. Write the rule down and tell the cashiers. Because every discount is stored with the sale, you can later review how much you gave away and whether it brought in business, then tighten or loosen the policy with real numbers.
7Example: a bulk bill
A restaurant owner buys 10 bags of rice at Rs 5,900 each, Rs 59,000 in all, plus oil worth Rs 21,000. The bill is Rs 80,000. You agree Rs 1,500 off the rice line and a further 1% on the whole bill. The app works the line discount first, then the bill percentage on what remains, and prints the final total. The customer sees one clear figure, and you see the exact discount recorded for the day.
